Cloudy Bay Shack

  • Name Cloudy Bay Shack
  • Client LVMH Group and Cloudy Bay Vineyards
  • Location Marlborough, NZ
  • Year 2010 - 2012

The ‘Shack’ is a corporate accommodation and events venue for LVMH, a crowning point for the Cloudy Bay Winery in Marlborough, NZ.

Views across the vineyards to the Richmond Ranges determined the overall gesture of this regional building. The view directly relates to the image on the Cloudy Bay label, thereby strengthening the provenance of the brand.

The exterior is composed of materials typical of the region: weathered steel and timber,  evoking rustic buildings seen locally. The entry sequence deliberately dramatises the ‘Cloudy Bay’ view. On arrival, the visitor faces two weathered steel walls, resembling someone holding their arms out to welcome an old friend.

On entrance, the interior is unexpectedly warm and sophisticated, lined in timber and stone.

Bedrooms and bathrooms have the same orientation as the spaces below. Visitors can be private behind their timber screen or open it and enjoy the grand Cloudy Bay view.

The magnificent view is revealed in stages, first glimpsed past concertina panels, then seen in its entirety as the visitor descends the three steps to the entertaining level.
