This unique Park, the eastern headland of Port Phillip Bay, includes 470 Ha of coastal landscape featuring ocean and bay beaches with rare and endangered flora and fauna. Significant buildings include a range of 20th century defensive fortifications and gun emplacements and the extensive former Quarantine Station, a complex of 80 buildings, many of very high heritage significance, dating from the 1850s. TZG, with Taylor Cullity Lethlean, have been engaged by Parks Victoria to develop the master plan for the ongoing conservation of the place, and its adaptation to provide for a vibrant and sustainable mix of public, commercial and educational uses.

The “Smart Home’ will be a real-life laboratory developed within an existing house in Sydney’s Newington, which already includes a range of energy-saving technologies. This ‘house of the future’ will be refitted to showcase and test new technologies to reduce household energy and water use, including alternative electricity supply and storage options, such as micro-generation and battery storage technology, fully interactive smart metering to manage real-time consumption at every point, and the benefits of a HAN environment. The project will support a cutting-edge electric vehicle.

The Smart Home will be integrated with EnergyAustralia’s Smart Village program for newington, which will use the best energy and water management technology available to give 1,000 households the ability to reduce their environmental footprint and their household utility bills.

The Smart Home will accommodate a family who will report live on their experience with the new technologies as they are installed. TZG is working with Ellen Woolley Architects on this forward looking project.

The Old Tannery, a stout brick factory-style edifice built for the training of tanners in the 1930s, enjoys no official heritage status. Our clients, however, viewed it differently. Kane Constructions are a building company that pursues unusual and inventive building projects and they wanted their Sydney office building to reflect this.

The original two-storey main building is a robust ironbark trabiated structure with exposed bearers, joists and timber cross bracing, and handsome oregon trusses.

The brief required the use of the original building for offices, print room and reception, which we located on the ground and first floors, and meeting rooms, two of which we housed on a new mezzanine floor. The building also needed WCs, kitchen, impressive foyer area, adequate car/bicycle parking, disabled access and some means of identifying the company from the street without using overt street signage.

The new addition takes the form of a contemporary ‘landmark’ shape, aligned with the original building, at the same scale and in strongly industrial-looking materials. It was conceived as a striking interlocking double wedge form, cantilevered above the remnant front brick wall, and connected to the old building via a glazed slot serving as a passageway.

TZG were asked to participate in the Feasibility Study for the Kur-ring-gai Civic Centre, focusing on the Gordon Council Chambers Site. In order to test the proposed Ku-ring-gai planning controls, the TZG proposal clustered a number of public uses as discrete buildings.

The focus is a large public space around which the buildings step down from the Pacific Highway.

At the lowest (west) end these open out into a new public park containing large remanent gum trees.

The use of each building is encoded by different environmental cladding types. The centre’s different events thus lead to the visual articulation of the buildings.
